The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a historic victory in the Ablekuma North Constituency, with its parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, emerging as the winner of the rerun election held today.
According to the Electoral Commission, Ms. Aubynn garnered 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating her closest rival, Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 33,881 votes. A total of 411 ballots were rejected during the voting process.
The rerun election was necessitated by irregularities and disputes that arose during the December 7, 2024, general elections, which rendered the results from 19 polling stations unverifiable. The constituency had remained without parliamentary representation for over seven months pending the resolution of the electoral impasse.
Despite incidents of violence and disruptions at some polling stations, the election was largely peaceful, and voting proceeded smoothly. The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that order was swiftly restored after tensions flared at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling centre, where unidentified individuals reportedly assaulted Ms. Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Ms. Aubynn’s victory marks a significant breakthrough for the NDC in the traditionally NPP stronghold, and her declaration as the winner restores parliamentary representation to the Ablekuma North Constituency.
