Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission, Prof. Alidu Mahama Seidu, has been elected as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate ahead of the by-election in the Tamale Central constituency in the Northern Region.
He secured eight hundred and forty votes (840) out of a total of 1,476 votes cast in the keenly contested internal primary held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale today, Saturday, September 6, 2025.
His closest contender, a former Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Lawyer Hanan Gundadow Abdul Rahaman, obtained five hundred and thirty-six (536) votes.
The political science lecturer turned politician will now contest the September 30 by-election in an attempt to succeed the late NDC Member of Parliament, who was also the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, who died in a tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, together with other government officials.
Meanwhile, 12 aspirants, including three women, contested the primary for the opportunity to represent the NDC in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
However, the landslide victory of Prof. Seidu did not come to many as a surprise given that he was one of the two frontrunners in the race.
Being the first candidate on the ballot, his contenders began to congratulate him immediately after the Electoral Commission finished counting his ballots, considering the number he polled against the total valid votes cast.
