Police in the Western Region have intercepted two truckloads of substances suspected to be Indian hemp following an operation at the Assokor barrier in the Shama Municipality.
According to reports , the operation took place on Monday, February 23, 2026, during routine checks by officers stationed at the barrier. The first truck was stopped for inspection, leading to the discovery of a large quantity of compressed parcels believed to be narcotic cannabis.
The Head of Public Affairs for the Western Regional Police Command, Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, disclosed that three individuals attempted to flee the scene when officers began searching the vehicle. One suspect was apprehended and subsequently led police to a second truck parked at Nkroful Junction, which was also found to be carrying similar packages.
During the course of the investigation, two suspects allegedly offered officers GH₵69,000 in a bid to secure the release of their colleague and the seized vehicles. The officers rejected the bribe and immediately arrested the individuals involved.
Police later offloaded the consignments and counted approximately 152 large bales, each reportedly containing about 82 compressed slabs of the suspected substance.
The suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations as authorities intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking within Shama and the wider Western Region.
