President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, signaling what officials describe as a renewed push to strengthen bilateral relations between the two West African countries.
The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the designation subject to the completion of the necessary diplomatic accreditation processes. Baba Sadiq’s nomination follows recent changes at Ghana’s Abuja mission. He is expected to spearhead efforts to deepen cooperation in trade, regional security, investment and cultural exchange, areas considered vital to both nations’ economic growth and stability.
A well-known media entrepreneur and communications strategist, Baba Sadiq previously contested the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His appointment marks a transition from media and politics into frontline diplomacy.
Ghana and Nigeria maintain longstanding ties anchored in shared economic and security interests, as well as their influential roles within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Observers say the new High Commissioner-designate will play a key role in advancing Ghana’s interests while reinforcing collaboration within the sub-region.
Upon receiving formal approval from Nigerian authorities, Baba Sadiq will assume leadership of Ghana’s High Commission in Abuja, overseeing diplomatic engagement and support services for Ghanaians living and working in Nigeria.
