The Northern Regional Election Security Taskforce has retrieved an AK47 assault rifle with two magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunitions from the office of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Savelugu, Alhaji Iddris Yakubu Abdulai, on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
The taskforce had to break into the office of the NDC PC to retrieve the weapon hidden in there.
The police also retrieved another AK47 rifle loaded with 40 rounds of ammunition and 21 additional ammunition, and one round of G3 rifle ammunition from the residence of Chief of Duko in Savelugu, Duko-Naa Mohammed Ahmed aged 60, who was arrested immediately.
Northern Regional Police Commander, COP Timothy Yoosa Bonga told journalists that the weapons were found during a search following a shooting incident that claimed the life of a girl and injured three others on Tuesday, a day after the December 7 elections.
The police also arrested 27-year-old Mohammed Fadillah and 38-year old Alhassan Dawuda for alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Mohammed Fadillah has been granted bail on grounds of ill health, while the others are in police custody pending further investigations.
According to the Police Commander, the NDC PC has been invited to the police station via phone, but if he fails to show up, “we will take the necessary steps to arrest him.”
Meanwhile, at the Tamale District Court 2 today, Alhassan Dawuda and Doku-Naa Mohammed Ahmed were charged for illegal possession of firearms.
They are to reappear in court on Thursday, December 17, 2020.
The police are also appealing to all residents who have credible information regarding the shooting incident to come forward and assist the police to exact justice.
