Barreto won the Lithuanian League cup with Stumbras in 2017

Ghana Premier league side Asante Kotoko have appointed Portuguese international Mariano Barreto as new head coach for the club.

Barreto comes in to head Abdul Gazale and Johnson Smith who took over after the sack of Maxwell Konadu with few games in the first round of the 2020/2021 season.

Kotoko, who seek to build a formidable side to compete both in the Ghana Premier League where they are currently 4th on the league table and in CAF club competitions hope the Portuguese appoint will be a good one.

The new coach to step in for the Porcupine Warriors begun his coaching career in 2003 after he took over as the head coach for Ghana in 2003.

Mariano, 64, last coached Lithuanian side Stumbras after he left his job as head coach for the Ethiopian national in 2015, just a year spell following his appointment in 2014.
