The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of mines, Hon. George Mireku Duker together with the joint security task force, ‘Operation Halt II’ have arrested 7 illegal miners at an illegal mining site in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Hon. George Mireku Duker, on a monitoring tour with his entourage of joint security officials to shut down the illegal mining site in the Birim North District, found these persons to be engaging in illegal mining activities.

During the operation, personnel of the security task force set ablaze 19 changfans and other illegal mining equipment found at the site.

Speaking to the media, the deputy Lands Minster lamented the hard-heartedness of the illegal miners and rebuked them for breaking the laws with impunity.

He warned that the government’s fight against illegal mining is in full swing and that the seven suspects will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

He added that the suppression of illegal mining is going to continue until the government and Ghanaians are satisfied with the state of our lands water bodies.

The Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem recounted that some lives have been lost at that particular mining site in the Birim North District and that authorities have served several warnings to the mining firm to stop operating.

“It’s very worrying that Ghanaians are drinking from diverted water that has been polluted by mercury. Farmers are also complaining that their farms are being destroyed. The Pra River has been diverted and polluted and I believe it is time for all Ghanaians to come on board to help fight it. We cannot fight it alone. All hands must be on deck to fight illegal mining.”

“I’m happy the security apparatus is helping us and I’m calling on all Ghanaians must be alert and help fight this. These people are going to be prosecuted and we are going to continue unabated”, he said.

The Deputy Lands Minster, therefore disclosed that as part of his monitoring tour with the ‘Operation Halt II’ joint security task force, he will stage unannounced visits to some mining sites as well as water bodies in the Eastern Region to clampdown all illegal mining activities.
