President Akufo-Addo has announced the establishment of an Unemployment Insurance scheme before the end of the year. He made this known at the May Day celebration when he joined the Trades Union Congress to mark International Workers Day.

According to President Akufo-Addo, unlike the private sector, public sector workers have had their jobs intact as the world battles the COVID 19 pandemic.

“This government in the midst of the pandemic, and despite the debilitating effects has gone to great lengths to try to protect the lives and livelihoods of the people. For the better part of one year, government provided free water for all households, as well free electricity for lifeline consumers and a 50 % discount for all other consumers. Public sector jobs for example have been maintained and unlike in the case of workers in the private sector, public sector workers have not experienced any retrenchment or any reduction in their wages and salaries throughout the period of this pandemic. This situation will not change. They and those who have been in the frontline of keeping all of us safe are recognized and recompensed”.

In his address president Akufo-Addo said the scheme will be seeded by government in partnership with the Social Partnership Council.

“In addition the first unemployment insurance scheme seeded by government is being championed by the Social Partnership Council and it to be established by year end”.

The president also committed to the vaccination of all workers to protect their lives and enhance productivity.

“We would also use this year to enhance all workers are vaccinated to protect their lives and enhance their productivity”.
