The Ghana Armed Forces says officers who were captured in a viral video brutalizing residents in Wa will be punished.


On Thursday July 1, 2021 courtesy an amateur video, soldiers were seen molesting some residents in the Upper West Regional Capital Wa over an alleged missing phone. They also assaulted the PRO officer of the Upper West Regional Coordinator Cletus Awuni for allegedly taking a video of the incident.


Officers who could not be immediately identified, stopped tricycles and brutalized particularly young men.  The victims who are mostly commercial tricycle operators, motorists and pedestrians were whipped and made to roll on the bare floor with some forced into gutters nearby.

Two of them are currently on admission at the Wa Municipal Hospital

Reacting to the incident via a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces assured that the officers involved would be punished accordingly


“This unprofessional conduct took place on Thursday, 1 July 2021 and at a time when the Commanding Officer of the soldiers, and the Chairman of the Regional Security Council were both out of town on official engagements”.

“Internal disciplinary measures have been instituted to deal with all those who will be found culpable in this unprofessional conduct by the soldiers”.

The GAF also indicated that it will be sending a delegation to the area to engage traditional authorities in the area with the aim of calming nerves and restoring the cordial relationship between the service and the people of the area.

“In view of the seriousness of the matter, the Chief of the Army Staff is leading a high powered military delegation to Wa to meet the traditional and opinion leaders to find an amicable way of resolving this unfortunate incident. The delegation will also explore means to assuage the anger of the people and promote good neighborliness,” the statement noted.
