The latest Ghanaian Catholic Bishop to be made Cardinal, H.E. Richard Kuuia Baawobr is expected to undergo heart surgery in Rome this week.
The Bishop of Wa Diocese took ill upon his arrival in Rome for a ceremony officially making him a Cardinal.
Reports indicate that H.E. Richard Kuuia Baawobr is receiving treatment at the Santo Spirito Hospital in Rome.
“Surgery will take place before the weekends,” a CNA report quoted Communications Director for the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Father Dieu-Donne Kofi Davor.
Notwithstanding his inability to attend the consistory, the 63-year-old Bishop of Wa is still a valid Cardinal for the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis announced the Cardinal’s ill health in a sermon at the August 27 consistory saying “I do not want to end without recalling Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, Bishop of Wa, who yesterday, upon his arrival in Rome, felt bad and was hospitalized with a heart problem,” Pope Francis said at the consistory.
