An estimated GHS20 million has been budgeted as expenditure for the government’s tertiary education scholarship programme for the first graduates of the Free Senior High School (SHS).

The amount is expected to benefit some 15,000 students for the 2020/2021 academic year.

A statement from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat indicated that the scholarship covers academic facility user fees for all accredited public and private local tertiary institutions.

All Free SHS graduates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2020 and have gained admission or have applied for admission into an accredited local tertiary institution are eligible to benefit.

Meanwhile, the application has been opened between December 1 – 5, 2020 while the nationwide selection interviews have been slated for December 16 – 29, 2020.

The application has been hosted online.

This comes after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) adjusted its original manifesto promise from paying half fees to absorbing all fees for freshers.

The NDC’s last minute manifesto promise adjustment also came after the NPP had publicized plans to announce the scholarships.
