Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of parliament, John Jinapor says the Ghana Grid Company, (GRIDCo) is bankrupt, reason most parts of the country are experiencing intermittent power outages popularly called “Dumsor”

Many Ghanaians have taken to mostly social media to express their frustration with the inconsistencies in power supply and the impact it is having on their lives.

Commenting on the situation on Accra based Starr FM, the Yapei Kasawgu MP accused government of not being candid with Ghanaians about the true state of affairs in relation to the country’s power situation which has resulted in the recent power outages.

“They are not telling the truth. We also have people there. GRIDCo is bankrupt, That’s a fact. They don’t have money. Over the past four years, they’ve been struggling to stay afloat and so they’ve not been able to maintain a lot of their equipment. A lot of their equipment is now obsolete. There’s population growth, so there’s an increase in consumption, there’s pressure on ECG’s equipment and there’s pressure on GRIDCo’s equipment.”

Mr. Jinapor further explained that the challenges being encountered had nothing to do with power generation.

“Before we left office, the issue of generation was dealt with. So, the major problem is not the generation,  it’s how to evacuate the power to you the end-user and it is because of years of neglect because of their financial predicament, that is why we are going through the current load-shedding that we are experiencing. It is only proper that they come out with a time-table.”

Meanwhile GRIDCO has revealed that it in talks with the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, NEDCo to come up with a time-table to assist consumers.

“The contractors are asking for some outages at some particular places so these are the areas where we are looking at a discussion with some key stakeholders like ECG and NEDCo so we can arrive at some appreciable timetable to communicate where there is the need for outages to happen.Corporate Communications Manager at GRIDCo, Ebenezer Amankwah told Accra based Joy News.
