Authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST has suspended upcoming SRC Elections following violent clashes between students of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti).


Per a statement issued by the school the suspension is until further notice.


“Management of KNUST has suspended all activities leading to the 2021 SRC elections with immediate effect until further notice. This follows a clash between supporters of two aspirants who are believed to be affiliates of University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti)”.


The statement also provided details of what investigations into the incident has so far revealed.

“Investigations so far reveal that the vetting, which was held on Saturday, 3 July 2021 at the Great Hall, proceeded smoothly, until it got to the aspirants for the SRC presidential slot when the clash occurred. One student is officially known to have sustained minor injury in his palm from a broken bottle and is undergoing treatment at the KNUST Hospital. Some chairs, flowerpots and glass doors at the Great Hall were also damaged.


According to the school authorities calm has been restored after the incident and further indicated that a committee was going to be set up to probe the incident.

“The security officers made up of Ghana Police and University security personnel present managed to restore calm. A committee is to be constituted to thoroughly investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations for the consideration of authorities”.


The statement concluded by assuring parent and stakeholders of the University that “there is absolute calm and students are going about their normal activities peacefully. The University will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for productive academic work”.
