Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, North Tongu MP

Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said Ghanaians should be ready for four by-elections any time soon.

His comment follows a Supreme Court ruling ordering embattled Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, to stop holding himself as an MP.

According to the apex court, the order will be valid until the determination of a suit challenging the constitutionality of his election.

In a 5-2 majority decision earlier today, the Supreme court is of the view that the High Court in Cape Coast has declared the election of Mr. Quayson as null and void, and therefore allowing him to continue as an MP while the constitutional issue was yet to be determined “will be an indictment of the administration of justice,”

“There can be no justification for ignoring the submissions on the continued disregard of the orders of the High Court which have not been suspended or overturned,” the ruling said.

Mr. Ablakwa in a Facebook post says that President Akufo-Addo and the NPP government are determined to have a by-election in Assin North to cripple the NDC in the numbers game in parliament.

According to him, the NPP should be ready for more of what it has begun because the NDC will deal with the issue of some 3 NPP absentee MPs which will trigger more by-elections.

“If there is one thing you have to credit President Akufo-Addo and his coterie— it’s their killer instinct. They are determined to have a by-election in Assin North and absolutely nothing must get in their way. I hope this informs my own party’s conduct from hence, particularly in how we deal with the 3 NPP absentee MPs, especially when comparatively we have a much stronger and irrefutable constitutional basis to succeed,” the North Tongue MP wrote.

“When a very unpopular government cannot be bothered about the people of SALL but is doing everything under the sun to confirm it’s unpopularity in one by-election, you help give them 4 by-elections instead of conceding to 1. Let the by-elections begin,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
