Over 15 shops have been destroyed in yet another fire at the Mankessim Market in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region. This incident happened at about 10 PM, Sunday May 30, 2021.

This is the third fire incident at the market this year.

The list of shops razed include, Agro Chemical Shops, book shops, TV and Radio repair shops among others.

According to an eyewitness, they heard an explosion which was later followed by smoke coming from the wooden shops which spread to the others

A victim told journalists he lost all his wares and belonging to the fire.

Speaking on behalf of the District fire Officer, DCO Luis Buckman said they had a difficulty accessing the scene due to congestion.

“This is the third time we have recorded a fire incident in this market this year. It’s sad and unfortunate. When we got we saw that the area is congested and the some of the structures are too weak. According to eyewitnesses, these wooden structures are over 30 years old. So they are very old. If they were new structures they wouldn’t burn this way. The eyewitnesses also say the fire was not caused by an electrical fault, it was cause by someone who was working with fire inside. They also claim that there was a man inside who cannot be found. But that aspect is being investigated by NADMO and the other agencies to determine indeed if someone was in there”

He further appealed to the local assembly to address the issue of congestion and renovate the outmoded structures, and admonished traders to be safety conscious and avoid indiscriminate use of fire.
