This year, like previous election years, several chiefs and traditional leaders openly declared their support for one presidential candidate or another – the usual choice being between flagbearers of the two leading political parties NPP and NDC.
Several renowned traditional leaders, including even Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin II have not hidden their choice in a candidate.
But in history, the overlord of the Asante Kingdom, no matter who he is at any point in time, has never come out openly to declare support for any candidate, overtly or covertly, even though the Ashanti Region is a known stronghold of the NPP.
However, in one of the most subtle and silent moves by Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, he seem to be indicating to his subjects in Ghana and all of the world that his support is for the number one person on the ballot paper for the December 7 election.
The Asantehene wore a cloth with a symbol that ordinarily signifies “number one”, to welcome President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the commissioning of the Asantehene Multi-fruit Processing Plant and Greenhouse at Bodukwan in the Ashanti Region.
The gesture of the Asantehene is being widely seen as a silent message to President Akufo-Addo that Asanteman is behind him.
ABC News contacted some historians to try and understand what that symbol mean in Ashante tradition, but the response was that it has not specific meaning except for the general meaning that everyone knows – Number one.
