President Nana Akufo-Addo has declared that he will back any individual elected as presidential candidate by the New Patriotic Party going into the 2024 general elections.
According to him, he will not be for any of the candidates until the party officially elects an aspirant.
Speaking on a Kumasi-based radio station as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region, President Akufo-Addo said “My duty is in two folds. One is, first of all, to hold a balance to make sure there is a level playing field for all of them (aspirants) because the decision has to be the decision of the party, and whoever the party elects as its flagbearer for 2024 that person is the one I will support and campaign for the person to become president.”
Although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is yet to open nominations for presidential aspirants, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Friday ignited discussions on presidential ambitions when he mentioned the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, and the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, as some of the ministers who are seeking to replace him as President when he met the Asantehene.
So far, names such as Vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Agric Minister, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Minister for Trade and Industries, Boakye Agyarko, a former Minister of Energy; Mr Joe Ghartey, former Minister of Railways Development, Dr. Konadu Apraku, former Trade and Industry Minister, and Mr. Kennedy Agyapong among others are in the media space as aspiring to contest for the flagbearer position of the party for the 2024 election.
