President Gotabaya Rajapaksa

Reports indicate that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka has fled his home country following protests by citizens over what has been described as a mismanaged economic crisis.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa had announced to resign on July 13 following protests that led to demonstrators storming his official residence and setting the prime minister’s house on fire.

The country’s air force confirmed the 73-year-old flew to the Maldives with his wife and two security officials.

In his absence, he has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president.
