Ghana’s Parliament launches second edition of Democracy Cup
Parliament officially launched the second edition of the annual Democracy Cup on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House. The event marked another step in Parliament’s innovative approach to fostering civic engagement and national unity through the power of football.
Initiated in 2024 by the Parliament of Ghana, the Democracy Cup quickly established itself as a significant sporting occasion.
The maiden edition, held on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, saw a thrilling encounter where Kumasi Asante Kotoko triumphed over arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak with a 2-1 victory, lifting the inaugural trophy in front of a captivated audience.
The Democracy Cup is more than just a football tournament; it forms an integral part of Parliament’s broader strategy to connect with the citizenry through sports and shared national events. It serves as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s democratic journey, highlighting the crucial role that sports can play in fostering peace, cohesion, and patriotism across the nation.
The launch drew a distinguished gathering, underscoring the growing importance of the tournament. Attendees included Members of Parliament, led by the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, as well as prominent figures from the football community such as Ghana Football Association and CAF second Vice President Kurt Okraku, other football administrators and enthusiastic club supporters.
With the successful first edition now a benchmark, Parliament is poised to build on that momentum and further entrench the Democracy Cup as a permanent and highly anticipated fixture on the Ghanaian football calendar. The continued success of this initiative promises to strengthen the bond between Parliament and Ghanaians, using the universal appeal of football to promote national values.
