Police have arrested Solomon Siaw Tetteh, believed to be the leader of a carjacking group operating in the Krobo area. He had been on the police wanted list in connection with several car theft cases.
Tetteh was arrested on Sunday, May 18, at Nuaso, a community in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality. He had previously escaped arrest when police raided his house last week. During that failed operation, three of his gang members were arrested to assist with investigations.
Police say the gang stole vehicles from several towns, including Nkurakan, Asesewa, Somanya, and Ada Magazine. The stolen cars were reportedly dismantled and turned into coal pots.
While transporting Tetteh to the Koforidua Divisional Police Headquarters, officers had to change their route. They avoided the Nkurakan-Asaman road after learning that angry youth had blocked it, allegedly planning to attack Tetteh for his crimes in their area. Instead, the police used an alternative road to reach the station safely.
At the station, Tetteh was presented to the public along with some of the stolen vehicles and tricycles. Despite the evidence and the presence of some victims, he denied all charges.
Police say investigations are still ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang. Tetteh will be arraigned once investigations are complete.
