Parliament has summoned two ministers to address the tragic drowning of seven Lawra Senior High School students who perished while crossing the Black Volta River on June 13, 2025.
The ministers, Muntaka Mubarak (Minister for the Interior) and John Jinapor (Minister for Energy and Green Transition), are expected to brief Parliament on the events leading to the tragedy. They will also address concerns over the lack of life jackets in communities that depend on water transport.
During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, June 17, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako endorsed a proposal by Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor for the ministers to appear before the House. The issue was described as critical and in need of swift action.
The government may consider reallocating budget portions to address the emergency. Second Deputy Speaker Amoako suggested that the Interior Ministry’s budget could be reviewed to allocate funds for emergency situations like this.
The Ministry of Education has expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the affected families. The bodies of the seven students have since been buried.
