Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) custody.
Wontumi’s release follows his fulfillment of the GH¢50 million bail conditions with two justified sureties.
Wontumi’s legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, had withdrawn a motion seeking a review of the bail conditions on Monday, June 2. The motion, originally filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025, was slated for hearing on Tuesday, June 3.
Wontumi was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, and his legal team confirmed that the bail requirements were met by Friday, May 30. However, his release was delayed due to the pending motion.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua, announced Wontumi’s release at the EOCO headquarters on Monday evening, expressing gratitude to Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for his support.
Wontumi is under investigation for alleged fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that the investigation involves a complex international dimension, with EOCO working with international law enforcement partners to recover suspected assets linked to criminal activity.
Following his release, Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations.
