The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced plans to stage a nationwide strike on June 10, 2025, in protest against the recently introduced GHC1.00 levy on petroleum products, popularly known as the “Dumsor Levy.”
According to Abass Ibrahim Imoro, Industrial Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, the union is strongly opposed to the levy, which they believe will cause significant hardship to commercial drivers and transport business owners.
“We are therefore calling on the government to reverse the levy immediately and engage us and stakeholders on the way forward,” Imoro said during a press conference on Thursday. “In the event that our call is not heeded, we will be compelled to take industrial action and park our vehicles on June 10, 2025.”
Imoro urged the government to consider the impact of the levy on the transport sector and the potential consequences of their action on the economy. “We urge the government to… engage us in meaningful deliberations to help address challenges in the energy sector,” he added.
The levy, introduced through the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, is expected to generate GHC5.7 billion in revenue to reduce the country’s energy sector debt. However, GPRTU argues that the decision was made without adequate consultation and will lead to increased operational costs for transport operators.
The union’s ultimatum comes amid growing concerns about the impact of the levy on the transport sector and the broader economy. The strike, if it goes ahead, is likely to cause significant disruptions to transportation services across the country.
